Biology?

Biology is the study of living organisms and their interactions with the environment, ranging from microscopic cells to complex ecosystems. It seeks to uncover the fundamental principles that govern life processes such as growth, reproduction, metabolism, and adaptation. Instead of focusing solely on memorizing vocabulary and facts, studying biology emphasizes understanding the underlying mechanisms and concepts that explain how living systems function. By exploring the "why" and "how" behind biological phenomena, students develop a deeper comprehension that enables them to think critically, solve problems, and make connections across different areas of science. This approach fosters a true appreciation of the natural world and equips learners with the tools to contribute meaningfully to fields like medicine, environmental conservation, and biotechnology.

Our Club

NHS USABO Club aims to bring excitement to biology all while helping students through tutoring. We meet every other Tuesday in room 231 from 2:30-3:00. During after-school meetings, we tackle tough biology problems, dive into interesting labs, and train for the USABO competition. We strive to provide a safe place for similar-minded students to share their interest in biology beyond the classroom. Our club strives to change members' perspectives of biology from a memorizing task to a subject they can enjoy and cherish. USABO club hopes to foster problem-solving skills in addition to the curriculum taught in school. If you are interested, you can join the sign up to join the emailing list.

Levels of USABO

The USA Biology Olympiad (USABO) is a national competition designed to inspire and challenge high school students in the biological sciences. It progresses through several levels: beginning with the Open Exam, a multiple-choice test open to all registered students to assess foundational knowledge; followed by the Semifinal Exam, where top scorers from the Open Exam face more challenging questions requiring deeper understanding; then the National Finals, where the highest-ranking students receive intensive training and compete in advanced theoretical and practical exams; and culminating in the selection of the top four students to represent the United States at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO). The purpose of the USABO is to foster excellence in biology education, promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and identify and nurture talented students who may become future leaders in the biological sciences.
